In 1999, Prince Edward Heights Institution, near
Belleville, closed. Doors were locked, supplies
were left and the building was abandoned as its
residents, some of whom had lived there since
birth, moved home to their communities. This
exhibit shows the beginning of the end of a darker
chapter in Ontario’s history – where people
considered “less than perfect,” or who we used to
call “retarded,” were shut away and ignored.
