Pengkuei Ben Huang Solemn Pines, Fading Things
Huang began visiting Tohoku coast in northeastern Japan in 2012 to document transformation in the aftermath of an earthquake and tsunami. He learned how a supposed recovery effort had a profound impact on the environment and the people living on these lands. These photographs tell a story of hope and uncertainty about the future, as well as grieving for the lost. Huang’s work shows a community that is hopeful yet sombre, fragile yet strong, and vulnerable but determined as they come to terms with tragedy.
