Anthea Baxter-Page India: Life and Lens
For her third exhibition for CONTACT Photography
Festival in Toronto, Anthea Baxter-Page seizes
unique and meaningful moments from the flux of
chaotic Indian life. Photojournalistic in style and
nostalgic in feel, the resulting portraits and
still life photographs seek to subvert any
preconceived notions about the well-documented
country. Many of the typical social and political
identifiers are stripped, leaving the viewer to
connect with the more humanist nature of the work.
As an alert and sympathetic observer, ABP reveals
her undeniable personal affection for her subjects
in these quiet portraits. While not always
performing for the camera, the subjects are aware
of it, having granted their collaboration, and
accepting the photographer as an active
participant in their experience.
