Self Image
For the past three years, Jen Davis has been
photographing her own body on a day-to-day
basis. By examining her self-image as an obese
female in her mid 20’s, she confronts the ever-
present pressures related to issues of self-
identity. Through an intensive and very personal
documentation, her photographs raise questions
regarding beauty, body image, and identity and
confront many social stereotypes in contemporary
American culture.
“I have built a relationship between the camera and
myself. Through this I invite the viewer into my
private life, exploring the vulnerabilities that I
carry
which are associated with a life-long struggle with
my body image. Once I have made a picture, I can
then share my individual experience with the
world, allowing the viewer a glimpse into my life
and daily rituals. Through this photographic
process, I begin to find a visual form to articulate
my actions and insecurities”.
