Average Pictures
Scott Conarroe’s photographs are exposed for the
duration of twilight. At dawn the camera is opened
in darkness and shut when the streetlights go out.
At dusk an exposure begins at sunset and ends
when each lamp is relit. All the dramatic hues are
averaged into a single unaesthetic tonality.
Average Pictures are images of maximum
description yet they are distortions of the scenes
portrayed. Each photograph is subject to a
template conspicuously defined by very common
approach to visual composition and depicts a blend
of natural and artificial light. The camera produces
a tension between contradicting ways of seeing
and the truthfulness of these photographs exist in
the camera’s malleable interpretation of reality.
