Olivo Barbieri, site specific LAS VEGAS 05, The Paris; 2005

Exploring the urban landscape and the architecture
of cities around the world, Olivo Barberi’s ‘site
specific’ series is a continuation of his investigation
of selective focus, contrasting clarity and an
ethereal sense of space. Based in Milan Italy,
Barbieri began this series in 2004 with images of
Rome, and has since documented cities including
Las Vegas, Montreal, Amann and Shanghai. At
first glance, his images appear to be highly detailed
miniature models, though in fact all of them are
actual places photographed using a 35mm camera
in real space and time, from the aerial perspective
of a helicopter flying 300 to 500 feet from the
ground.

Barbieri’s images documenting the fantasy world
of Las Vegas are confounding portraits of
materialism and excess. His first film, dealing
with the same selective focus on Las Vegas, was
recently shown in festivals worldwide to great
critical acclaim. His works have been exhibited in
Canada, the United States and Europe and
extensively in Italy, including the Arte
Contemporanea, Roma, Galleria
Spazio Erasmus Brera, Milano, Centro Arte
Contemporanea, Siena.

CONTACT is a Toronto based non-profit organization dedicated to exhibiting, analyzing and celebrating photography and lens-based media through an annual festival that takes place every May.

Land Acknowledgement

CONTACT acknowledges that we live and work on the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, and that this land is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. CONTACT is committed to promoting Indigenous voices; to generating spaces for ongoing, meaningful, and creative Indigenous-settler dialogue; and to continuous learning about our place on this land.

Anti-Oppression

CONTACT is committed to the ongoing development of meaningful anti-oppressive practice on all levels. This includes our continuing goal of augmenting and maintaining diverse representation, foregrounding varied and under-represented voices and perspectives via our public platform (the Festival and all related programs), as well as continually examining the structures of power and decision-making within the organization itself. We aim to actively learn, grow, and embody the values of inclusivity, equity, and accessibility in all facets of the institution, as an ever-evolving process.
