Don Newlands 1960's Canada: A Nostalgic Glimpse
Don Newlands is one of Canada’s photographic grand
masters, a peripatetic documentarian whose work
defined photojournalism in the 1960’s. Assigned by
major magazines, Newlands regularly crisscrossed
the country in a succession of high performance
cars, acutely aware of the changing social
landscape around him and the need to document
those changes.
Once a bon vivant cavorting with the likes of
Pierre Trudeau, he has been in seclusion for many
years. His material has rarely been seen by
contemporary audiences. Persuaded by photo editor
Dolores Gubasta, he has slowly revealed his
extensive archive.
Newland’s natural portraiture shows Canadian
ways of life outside of major cities, particularly
in Newfoundland. He captured Canadian
personalities such as Trudeau (rowing to Cuba),
Joey Smallwood, Paul Martin Sr, Paul Anka (in NYC
on the Ed Sullivan show), Leonard Cohen, Stomping
Tom Connors, Robert Goulet and Gordon Lightfoot.
