Michael Awad’s latest presentation of his ongoing Entire City Project (2005 – ) features photographs of Toronto and Milan. Awad’s highly detailed images recompose single subjects—such as people on the Eaton Centre escalators on Boxing Day, or models on the catwalk for a Comrags fashion show—into multiple views to capture the experience of perception unfolding over time. This and studies of traffic modelling he conducted while teaching Urban Studies at the University of Toronto led him to become increasingly interested in how we move through the city. Described as “interpretive and cinematic,” Awad’s process of creating comprehensive, interpretive views of large-scale urban phenomenon requires the artist to use a combination of moving, still, and panoramic cameras in combination with custom image processing software. His photographs have a mosaic-like visual rhythm that reflects the systems and structures of the city and how this in turn shapes our experience and ways of seeing. The series marks a new phase in his practice. Awad states, "My experience of the city is changing. I used to be interested in the physical aspect of the city—its buildings—but now I am exploring daily life, the people, and events."
