Isabel M. Martinez The Weekend
In The Weekend, Isabel M. Martinez joins two different photographs vertically within a single frame, which creates a disorienting “push and pull” between foreground and background. Using in-camera masks, images are grafted into a simultaneity that challenges the eye; scenes are brought together but never completely blended. These large-scale works constantly shift the viewer’s focus between competing subjects, juxtaposing scenes of leisure with landscapes.
Perception is a recurring theme within Martinez’s practice, and has become a foundation for her to explore the limits of photography. When time and space are dissected and spliced, cut and pasted, a new interpretation of temporality emerges that is dual and parallel.
Isabel M. Martínez is a Toronto-based visual artist who spent her formative years in Santiago de Chile. She has exhibited internationally in solo and curated group shows in galleries, art centres, festivals, and biennials in Canada, the UK, the United States, Chile, France, Brazil, Colombia, Spain, and the Netherlands.
